When you have loads of fresh plums from the backyard , you make plum jam! And of course , be kind and give a few to the neighbours 🙂
The last few seasons i tried baking a plum galette , plum spicy chutney and this time around had to do a plum jam. Most importantly, i wanted to try a healthier version of this jam.. less sugar or maybe no sugar? Yes ! the idea worked.. i substituted few dates and a drizzle of honey to balance out the tartness of the few unripe plums ..
You know the recipe has worked when your little ones have Bread and Jam for lunch and dinner ! a happy mum all the way … 😀
1/2 kg fresh plums
8-10 pitted dates
1 tablespoon honey
2 tablespoon mulled spice mix
This is how I made it,
Wash the plums, de-stone and then cut them in halves.
Add the plums to the pot, add the pitted dates, spice mix and let it boil for 10-15 minutes;keep stirring occasionally
Simmer and cover the pot for another 10 min
Keep stirring gradually and you will see the consistency has thickened along with a deep intense red colour;
Add honey and let it cook for another 5 min.
Ladle into a sterilised jar
Serve immediately on a hot toast or fresh bread with oodles of butter
